The main thing is to make sure you get the recipes the other materials are farmable through other means, but the recipes will only be available during the collab. You do waste some materials doing it that way, but you get a fairly effective weapon quicker. Gear grind is without a doubt the most tedious part of WOTV, so the best advice I can give is to just keep at it. Books are unfortunately the worst part, you'll get some from the events but if you're missing any your best options are to grind the secret book quests (whenever the right type is up) or exchange other types of books for the one you need (though I usually only do that if I only need a few). But you can get them from story events at various drop rates - check wotv-calc for the specific rates. Materials will come somewhat naturally from the recipe grind, but you'll likely be missing abominable wings even if once you get the recipes you need.
